Brand Drugs: Drugs are called brand drugs when a pharmaceutical company produces/launches new drug with patent right of 10 years. Since name, shape, size, taste and color of the drug are patented to the company who invented that drug, no other company can produce similar drug with identical properties.

Generic Drugs: Generic drugs are drugs that contain same chemicals as in brand drugs but are different in color, shape, taste from brand drugs. Generic version of brand drug is also legal. Like brand drug, generic drug also has to go through strict approval process in order to get approval from FDA (A Government branch that regulates Foods and Drugs related issues)

Patient can ask physician to prescribe generic version of the brand drug. Unless Dispense As Written� is written, law allows pharmacist to give you generic version of the prescribed medicines.

Prescription Drugs: A drug which can not be bought without a valid prescription written by qualified physician is called Prescription Drug. Every drug has its own administration method to treat certain health condition. Drugs whose side effects and over dose reactions can lead to life threatening condition are classified into Prescription drugs.

Over The Counter Drugs: Over the counter drugs requires no prescription in order to buy from drug store. Since side effects of these drugs are relatively mild (though side effects vary from person to person) people are allowed to buy it without prescription.
