Azithromycin

Azithromycin is used to treat bacterial infections such as of lungs and airways due to which pneumonia, bronchitis can occur, chlamydial infections, otitis media, sinusitis, typhoid and bacterial infections of skin.

Working mechanism

Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic. Azithromycin is a broad spectrum antibiotic and acts by destroying the proteins essential for development and reproduction of bacteria. The spread of bacteria is prevented and killed by the immune system of the body. It can be used to treat infection like upper or lower airway infection, infection of skin or genitalia.

Contraindications

It is contraindicated in children under the age of 6 month, severe disease of liver, always to ketolide type antibiotics & children who are having weight less than 45 kg.

Interaction with other drugs

The interactions of this drug must be recognized before taking this medicine. The doctor must know the herbal drugs, supplements that you are and have been on before you ask his advice on this drug. If you develop or experience any kind of allergy while taking this medicine, you must immediately contact your doctor and consult him for continuation or stoppage of this remedy. There are drugs which you should not combine with this medicine as they will reduce the effectiveness of the drug or alter it to cause adverse reaction.

The amount of this drug will decrease if taken with pimozide, digoxin, the ophylline, ciclosporin, quetiapine, mizolastine and rebotexine. The bleeding time increases when taken with anticoagulants like warfarin. Azithromycin can affect the protection of oral contraceptive ills. Oral vaccinations like vivotif must not be taken three days before or after the ingestion of azithromycin.

Side effects

Some drugs will cause side effects if you take it in excess amounts or for prolonged period. The side effects give here are on an individual basis some patients may experience rare side effects and some may experience common side effects may appear in the patients consuming this drug. You must consult your physician if you experience highly uncomfortable symptoms, not listed here in the side effects. The side effects are observed from large or physiological doses of this drug in the studies and while clinical research.

Side effects include fainting, arthalgia, vaginitis, vertigo, loss of appetite, skin rash, itching, headache, convulsions, taste disturbances, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea vomiting candidiasis, arrhythmias, and photosensitivity, disorders of kidney and livers, palpitations, insomnia, paraesthesia, asthenia, hyperactivity, hearing disturbances, anxiety, aggressiveness, nervousness and agitation and thrombocytopenia.

Precautions

This medicine should not be given to those persons who are having abnormal heart rhythm or having any kind of heart disease and when kidney function is impaired.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

The consequences of the certain drugs are not recognized in pregnant woman and their impact has not been studied thoroughly in woman doing breastfeeding and in the infants. This may produce adverse effects for both mother and infant. Hence, every drug must be taken with caution. The passage of this drug into the milk may or may not occur, therefore should not be given until prescribed by physician and the impact of this drug have not been studied in pregnant women. Therefore, any drug should be considered carefully in both these conditions.

This medicine should to be given during pregnancy as it may harm the mother and fetus.

This medicine should not be given to those mothers who give breastfeed because this medicine may pass into milk, so it should not be given.
