Viagra

Viagra is used for erectile dysfunction and patients having impotency. It contains sildenafil citrate as an active ingredient.

Indications

It is used for patients having erectile dysfunction or for impotence or in patients desiring longer period of erections.

Working mechanism

Viagra contain sildenafil as an active component. It can treat erectile dysfunction by stopping the breakdown of the chemical compound responsible for erection. The compound is known as cyclic GMP. The cyclic GMP dilates the blood vessels present in the penis and cause erection to occur. Phosphodiesterase type 5 breaks the cGMP and causes cessation of erection of penis.

Viagra is a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor. It prevents the action of phosphodiesterase type 5 and allows cyclic GMP to remain intact for longer period and hence, maintains erection for 5 or more hours.

Contraindications

It is contraindicated in patients with non-arthritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), HIV drugs, in kidney, liver and heart failure, in unstable angina and in women and children below 18 years of age.

Interaction with other drugs

The interactions of this drug must be recognized before taking this medicine. The doctor must know the herbal drugs, supplements that you are and have been on before you ask his advice on this drug. If you develop or experience any kind of allergy while taking this medicine, you must immediately contact your doctor and consult him for continuation or stoppage of this remedy. There are drugs which you should not combine with this medicine as they will reduce the effectivity of the drug or alter it to cause adverse reaction.

Viagra should not be taken with nitrate containing drugs which can reduce the blood pressure like glyceryl trinitrate, nicorandil and any nitrate. Avoid it with antifungal drugs. It should not be taken with stalol, quinidine, procainamide, erythromycin and amiodarone.

Side effects

Some drugs will cause side effects if you take it in excess amounts or for prolonged period. The side effects give here are on an individual basis some patients may experience rare side effects and some may experience common side effects may appear in the patients consuming this drug. You must consult your physician if you experience highly uncomfortable symptoms, not listed here in the side effects. The side effects are observed from large or physiological doses of this drug in the studies and while clinical research.

The side effects include chest pain, headache, anxiety, painful erection, epistaxis, syncope, hypertension, tachycardia, dizziness, nausea, dyspepsia, blurred vision, loss of vision and difficult breathing.

Precautions

Use in carefully in bleeding disorders like hemophilia, active peptic ulcer, in penis abnormalities, heart, liver and kidney disease, old people, ECG variations, sickle cell anemia and aortic stenosis. Use the drug carefully, avoid fat and avoid grapefruit. If erections are continuous and stay for more than 4 hours, consult your physician at once to prevent irreversible impotency.
