Clomid

Clomid is used in women who are infertile due to failure of ovulation.

Working mechanism

Clomid is a drug used to treat infertility. It contains clomifene citrate as an active drug. Egg or ovum is released from ovaries under in the influence of two hormones follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone. These when reach at a particular level in the blood, there is negative feedback sent to the hypothalamus gland by the estrogen hormone. This stops further selection of FSH & LH and ovulation is not achieved in some women. Clomifene citrate blocks the oestrogen receptors present on hypothalamus and prevents the negative feedback mechanism with this FSH & LH levels keep on rising beyond the threshold. This leads to ovulation from the ovaries.

Contraindications

This medicine is contraindicated in pregnancy, in endometrial cancer, when lives function is impaired, in case ovarian cysts, and abnormal bleeding from uterus.

Interaction with other drugs

The interactions of this drug must be recognized before taking this medicine. The doctor must know the herbal drugs, supplements that you are and have been on before you ask his advice on this drug. If you develop or experience any kind of allergy while taking this medicine, you must immediately contact your doctor and consult him for continuation or stoppage of this remedy. There are drugs which you should not combine with this medicine as they will reduce the effectiveness of the drug or alter it to cause adverse reaction.

Clomid is a safe drug and its interactions have no adverse effects. There are no significant changes observed in patients when combined with other drugs.

Side effects

Some drugs will cause side effects if you take it in excess amounts or for prolonged period. The side effects give here are on an individual basis some patients may experience rare side effects and some may experience common side effects may appear in the patients consuming this drug. The side effects are observed from large or physiological doses of this drug in the studies and while clinical research.

Clomid can cause fatigue, convulsions, insomnia, salpingitis, pain in lower abdomen, hot flushes, breast discomfort, headache, nausea and vomiting, dysmenorrhea, psychosis, depression, endometriosis, skin rashes, itch, cerebrovascular accidents, dizziness, nervous tension, visual disturbances, over stimulation of ovaries that can cause increased production of eggs, spotting of blood in between menstrual periods.

Precautions

This medicine should not be given in case where there is any history of seizures, fibroids of uterus and endometriosis.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

The consequences of the certain drugs are not recognized in pregnant woman and their impact has not been studied thoroughly in woman doing breastfeeding and in the infants. This may produce adverse effects for both mother and infant. Hence, every drug must be taken with caution. The passage of this drug into the milk may or may not occur, therefore should not be given until prescribed by physician and the impact of this drug have not been studied in pregnant women. Therefore, any drug should be considered carefully in both these conditions.

This medicine should not be given during pregnancy and breast feeding as the drug has not been studied in pregnant women and women nursing the newborn infants.
